In a stunning move yesterday, Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo’s syndicated radio morning show “Piolin Por La Manana,”was canceled without explanation by Univision. Affiliates were told Monday afternoon that the show was canceled and would be replaced by music immediately. “Piolin” is arguably the most popular Hispanic Radio host in the country and no reason has been given for the reported dropping of the show, which airs on dozens of radio stations in more than 20 U.S. states.
The Los Angeles Times reports that his program, broadcast in Los Angeles on KSCA-FM (101.9), had begun to be eclipsed in the increasingly competitive world of Spanish-language morning radio. Ricardo “El Mandril” Sanchez’s program of regional Mexican music on radio station KLAX-FM (97.9) jumped into the No. 1 spot in the L.A.-Orange County market last month, gathering 5.3% of the available audience weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m.
Piolín is also known for his activism on immigration reform, and has often discussed his own experience of immigrating to the United States on his radio program. He’s scheduled to go into the National Radio Hall of Fame in November.
