Los Angeles-based radio syndicator MannGroup Radio has teamed up with veteran radio programmer Jeff Wyatt and record promotion exec Iris Dillon to launch “Afternoon Gumbo,” a new weekend offering set to begin in the first quarter of 2012. The two-hour show will feature a musical mix of artists ranging from Billie Holiday to the Zombies, Frank Sinatra to Steely Dan, the Temptations to Coldplay, Colbie Caillat to Ella and the Beatles to Michael Jackson.
Iris, a New Orleans native, stirs the artists and songs into the “gumbo,” then reaches out and touches listeners with stories and how it applies to what’s happening now. The total variety, MannGroup says is what the 25-54 music lover programs on their Pandora and their iPods.
Wyatt said, “It’s PPM and diary weekend appointment listening and TSL where you don’t expect it. Narrow-casting may be what’s happened to radio formats, but stations can surprise, enlighten and delight with this specialty program by going “broad.” Afternoon Gumbo is a “pinch of this” and a “dash of that” along with a teaspoon of inspiration our host brings to all whose path she crosses each day.”
Ed Mann of MannGroup added, “When I first spoke with Jeff and Iris about this, I knew there had to be a place for Afternoon Gumbo on the radio. There isn’t a Starbucks, Coffee Bean or even a Citibank that doesn’t play all of this music all day long to a rapt audience. And everything we’re seeing about the listening habits, particularly of female 25-54 Pandora and iPod listeners, includes a wide variety of eras, genre’s and hits.”
