The Nielsen Company inks ESPN Radio to a multi-year deal to use its radio audience measurement service in the U.S., set to launch in August, 2009. Former Interep Radio Sales president and COO Mike Walsh has joined ESPN Radio as special projects coordinator for its five owned and operated stations. Mike Tirico is stepping down from his syndicated daily ESPN Radio show with Scott Van Pelt to assume several other radio and TV assignments for the 24/7 sports network. ESPN is feeling the effects of advertising cuts more than at anytime in its history. So ESPN head George Bodenheimer is ordering a hiring freeze across the network, including ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes. About 200 positions will be eliminated and top executives won’t get a raise this year.
