ESPN Radio debuts ”The Scott Van Pelt Show” hosted by Sports Center anchor Scott Van Pelt this afternoon from 2-4pm ET. Joined by Ryen Russillo, the syndicated radio show replaces Tirico & Van Pelt in ESPN’s afternoon time slot. The new show will originate from ESPN’s Digital Center for a 3-4pm simulcast on ESPN2 and ESPN2HD. The Nielsen Company inks ESPN Radio to a multi-year deal to use its radio audience measurement service in the U.S., set to launch in August, 2009. Mike Tirico is stepping down from his syndicated daily ESPN Radio show with Scott Van Pelt to assume several other radio and TV assignments for the 24/7 sports network. Effective July 6, The Scott Van Pelt Show will air on ESPN Radio from 2-4pm (ET), with Van Pelt hosting the first hour solo before being joined by Boston radio and TV veteran Ryen Russillo for the second hour. Van Pelt’s and Rusillo’s 3-4pm hour will also feature a television simulcast on ESPN2.

ESPN is feeling the effects of advertising cuts more than at anytime in its history. So ESPN head George Bodenheimer is ordering a hiring freeze across the network, including ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes. About 200 positions will be eliminated and top executives won’t get a raise this year.
