Tom Magliozzi, who, along with his younger brother Ray hosted the popular NPR radio show Car Talk, died on Monday at 77 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Tom and Ray became famous as “Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers” in a radio career that lasted 35 years. The brothers, both MIT graduates, got into radio by accident in the mid-’70s after Boston NPR outlet WBUR invited them to join a panel of car mechanics on a talk show. Brother Tom was the only one that showed up and the station enjoyed his appearance so much they invited him back the following week. This time Tom brought Ray with him, and a show was born. The duo retired from radio in 2012, but Car Talk and the infectious laugh of Tom Magliozzi continues to live on in reruns.
